I was especially saddened to hear that SLO Sitters had to close their doors, as a result of many local families feeling the effects of the economy and have reduced their activities that require sitters. It was such a great service they provided.

IHOP in Grover Beach closed, really bad service anyhow. I also saw on the news The Old Vienna in Shell Beach closed.

Oh No! Not Old Vienna, ...where can I go do my chicken dance...

I used to live in Morro Bay, where there has been a lot of turnover in the "old town" business district in the last couple of years. The closings that hurt me the worst were The Bike Shop, Pacific Auto Service, and Two Dogs Coffee.

The last time I checked on "The Super-Block" of Grover Beach, there were 10 storefronts sitting empty in a two block stretch. Other businesses that were still open were for sale.

Nipomo recently lost its video store, it's brewery will be gone within a month, and they recently sold a fairly new firetruck (parked out on Tefft St. with a $2 For Sale sign in the window!). There are several other storefronts empty that have been vacant longer than I have been here.

But the real story is in many of the small businesses around the county that are still open. I know several of the owners of these businesses. A few are strangely unaffected by the economy so far, but many have been operating at a loss for over a year and are only hanging in there because they refuse to give up.

Meanwhile, Walmart seems to be doing better than ever by selling stuff cheap, and compensating their employees even cheaper. That is not a positive economic indicator BTW, IMO.

Daddy'Os Ice Cream (Formerly Cold Stone) in A.G., Quizno's in A.G. , Day old Bakery (Wonder Bread outlet) A.G. That's about all I can remember other than the ones mentioned already.

Funny, I see lots of US made items in Wal Mart and lots of foreign stuff in K Mart(Sears), yet no one bashes the Big K, why is that? They have even crapper wages, no incentive programs (unless you are management) nor medical / dental plan. The Wal Mart employees I have spoken with like their jobs and the company. Odd isn't it that they have little turn over. I am not an avid fan of WM or Big K for matter, what it really gets down to is reading the labels. Oh! how come no one bashes Harbor Tool Freight? Ever been in there, look at the crap they sell. I wonder, do they have high salaries and medical benefits for their employees?

I'm sad the quizno's is gone, we stopped by there the other day to get a sandwich and a salad...and it was closed. We use to have two...now none. I like quiznos better than subway.

I dont like cold stone, so I never went to daddy o's, cause I figured it was basically the same thing. I'd rather just go to rite aid and get a $1 cone.

I can't believe that mexican food restaurant in the old Pizza Hut building (20 years ago) on grand...kinda next to wet pets...is still open. I don't think I've ever seen anyone in there or parked in the parking lot...how have they managed to stay a float for 1+ years is beyond me.

The buildings on 13th and grand in grover just were torn down. Ellies relocated to the SLO down pub area...but where did the other business go? Salon B? (I think thats what it was called) Up in Smoke (just opened in that building) and proud pooch?? I think thats what was there...they are all gone now.

KK's use to be Col. Sanders years ago. It was Pismo Peppers for many years and then some catering truck business took over and now it KK's Bundt Cakes (oh so good and fattening) good and cheap cup of coffee too.

When Pizza Hut left it was an Italian rest. for a short time and then switched to pasta, Pasta Pronto I think it was. Then it was Thai Food which was there for a few years. Once that went out, Rosa'a Mexican food was there and now its Mexico Viejo.

If you go back that far you might remember that Broadway Bagel was Shakee's Pizza. Oak Park Rd dead ended at Grand Ave. A&W Root Beer was near there and a little farther down was The Quarter Deck Seafood. These are all gone when the road was cut through. Von's and the China Buffet (formerly Boston Market) are in there place. Rite Aid across the street was Young's Giant Foods.

Change is inevitable!
