A place to meet your neighbors & exchange ideas

That’s what I’ll have on my sign as I express my right to free speech at the July 4th Tea Party in San Luis Obispo.

I just found out that an event has been organized in SLO as the last ones, on April 15th, were in other communities like Atascadero and Santa Maria. As a registered Independent, I’m planning to attend to express my dissatisfaction with the direction our federal government (Democrats and Republicans) is going specifically with regard to excessive spending, increasing the size of government and forays into the private sector.

I know many on this Forum don’t approve of certain types of speech, specifically speech that they disagree with, and I’m expecting the worst from this posting. In any case, if you’re not pleased with what’s going on in Washington, whether left-leaning, right-leaning or moderate, consider attending one of the tea parties in the area on July 4th and have your voice heard.

I’m not associated with the event or any organization promoting the event. Rather I’m just regular folk and noticed no mention of this event on the Forum. So you’re now advised that the SLO event will be at Santa Rosa Park, July 4th from noon to 2:30pm as posted on their website: www.sloteaparty.com

I am one of the people who believe some of the wrong ??? people who report the news???
I find Oreilly, Hannity, Beck, Williams and others tell it like it is.
Some of us believe in big government. Some of us do not.
I believe in personal responcability.
Credit cards, Mortgages and so on..... Read the contract. If you don't like the terms?? Don't sign the contract. When you do sign up. You are now responcable. I did not understand is a poor excuse. Ignorance of the law (terms) is not a excuse.
Responcable people do not need the government to protect them from the loan sharks. And others who will take advantage of those who do not pay attention to the details.

The tea partys are trying to get people to take back responsability for their own actions.
Our federal and state governments have bigger problems to deal with than people blindly signing contracts that take advantage of people who do not bother with the fine print. And many other trivial matters.
The government needs to get out of the small day to day decisions. The ones we should make for ourselves. They (we) have more than we are handleing wisely in the international world. The president and other leaders in high places have bigger things to deal with than people who will not except the responsability for the small decisions in everyday life.

No Ed I did not forget rush. He is not on my good guy list. He does not practice what he preaches.

The tea partys have nothing to do with the last election. Mostly about out of control spending. Waste, fraud, abuse and people in power appointing their friends to jobs they are not qualified for.

Lots of sides to all the storys out there. Which side we take depends on who we believe.

Please bring lots of Budweiser. It is suposed to be a hot day.

too many stories. too many sides. too many people sure that they're on the right side.

balance requires equal attention to all sides, a broader perspective.

no political party is answer to nor the cause of our problems.

no network can claim sole possession of the big picture.

i would caution all against looking to one party or one network for answers.

Karen Hi. I will have a beer with you someday probably.
I think maybe you misunderstand me sometimes.
I did not say nor do I believe the waste, fraud and abuse of funds and power is a new thing. These abuses have been a problem for as long as there has been people.
I am not saying the present administration is any worse than the past ones. Some have done a better job than others.
We still have room for lots of improvment.

The problems I see now are to do with out of control spending mostly. Spending on programs that have never worked in the past. And I believe they will not work in the future.

And yes all the lives and money wasted on wars that can not be won is a real tragedy. We should come home and mind our own business.
Foreign countrys have no right to tell us how to run our country. And we have no right telling them how to run theirs.

Gary, I applaud your right to free speech. If you want to disagree, go for it. If you want my opinion, well, I'm extremely supportive of the new Congress and Executive. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for your comments. Let me just share that when Mr. Obama was elected I was cautiously optimistic that this brilliant, charismatic, younger President would view our serious national issues through a more modern lens. And with this view bring solutions that have been ignored or overlooked in the past. In some ways he’s done that, but unfortunately his solutions are inconsistent with my view of what needs to happen in America.

I’m a big believer in capitalism and the private sector. Yes, there have been problems and abuses, but I’m not prepared to scrap capitalism in place of a “nanny state”. Rather I’d prefer to see our government incent the private sector to help achieve its objectives. Government run entities like Amtrak, Post Office, Fannie May, etc. are not business models I’d like to see emulated. Compare that to UPS, Google, In-n-Out Burger, etc. where innovation, jobs and wealth are created.

Eight of the top ten employers in SLO County are government entities. Men’s Colony, Atascadero State Hospital, CalPoly, etc. How can we taxpayers sustain so much government? I’d prefer that list be in reverse with the private sector providing most of the jobs. The private sector must create products and services of value or it will fail. Jobs in successful companies increase over time and are usually sustainable. The wealth created rubs off on the entire community. Government jobs are necessary, but create little in the way of lasting and sustainable value (CalPoly excepted). So the goal, from my perspective, is to keep our government as small as possible while aggressively supporting private enterprise. That, I believe, leads to a healthy, sustainable economy.

So I’ll be expressing my views at the July 4th Tea Party not because I’m unhappy with the last election, but rather to provide some guidance to our elected officials that perhaps received the wrong message. I want change, but change I believe in. I hope they hear me.

Gary, I enjoy reading your posts. Whether I agree or disagree, you always have great perspective. Often, when it comes to politics I fall more in the "What happened?" category... We need to get together so you can share some more ideas.

Please share your thoughts... whether you agree or disagree. And especially if you disagree. That's the freedom offered at a site like CCT. We all live in the same community, but often see things differently. The problem with many is that they will only share their opinions with those who agree. That, to me, is boring and accomplishes little other than to reassure that you're correct. It's only through probing the differences that we might discover the truth.
PS. Keep the invites coming as it won't be long before we're once again face to face.
