A place to meet your neighbors & exchange ideas

That’s what I’ll have on my sign as I express my right to free speech at the July 4th Tea Party in San Luis Obispo.

I just found out that an event has been organized in SLO as the last ones, on April 15th, were in other communities like Atascadero and Santa Maria. As a registered Independent, I’m planning to attend to express my dissatisfaction with the direction our federal government (Democrats and Republicans) is going specifically with regard to excessive spending, increasing the size of government and forays into the private sector.

I know many on this Forum don’t approve of certain types of speech, specifically speech that they disagree with, and I’m expecting the worst from this posting. In any case, if you’re not pleased with what’s going on in Washington, whether left-leaning, right-leaning or moderate, consider attending one of the tea parties in the area on July 4th and have your voice heard.

I’m not associated with the event or any organization promoting the event. Rather I’m just regular folk and noticed no mention of this event on the Forum. So you’re now advised that the SLO event will be at Santa Rosa Park, July 4th from noon to 2:30pm as posted on their website: www.sloteaparty.com

I usually agree with you, but we haven't talked politics much, have we?

The reason I'm not expressing my opinions isn't due to a fear of disagreeing, but rather due to my own ignorance (isn't it better to refrain from speaking if you don't know what you're talking about?), so I just don't feel able to add a competent opinion. At the moment, my energies are focused on some other areas, so I'm a bit in the dark. That's why I'd love to talk with you, plus I respect you and your thoughts.

And don't you worry, I'll keeping sending those invites your way! Still thinking I might see you Saturday. What time will you get out there?

We plan to be there between 12:30pm and 2:30pm. Hope to see you there.

I envision the term “nanny state” to mean the government taking care of our every need. When we’re sick, the government provides healthcare; when we’re unemployed, the government provides jobs; when we want to buy a house, the government provides low cost loans; when we want to buy a car, the government provides tax credits; when we want to go to college, the government makes it easy to repay student loans; if we’re poor, the government provides housing; if we don’t earn enough, the government provides food stamps… well, you get the picture, ever-increasing dependence on government. The alternative is less government intrusion, self reliance and freedom. I prefer the uncertainty of the latter and that’s why I’ll be expressing myself at the Tax Protest on the July 4th and encourage all to “reject the nanny state”.

My guess is you've made choices in your life that bring you to where you are today. You can choose to be a victim or figure out the direction and actions to take now to make your life better in the future. One wonderful thing about America is it's totally up to you.

Federal income taxes are progressive with the lowest paid 40% of workers paying no tax at all. Those folks get all the government services just like the rest of us, but they get those services for free. Free is a pretty good deal don't you think?

Knut to just label it as "rich" is unjust. From your past statements I judge you as rich. Anyone who has a plantion in Hawaii is Rich and a Tesla.

I know from your post you are a caring person. So is rich alone is not the correct term or is it?
Thanks for sharing this article with us.
Unfortunately, bad things happen to otherwise good people. Just look at Farah Fawcett. But I call that life. It’s our individual responsibility to make the best of whatever cards we’re dealt.

You’re example of someone getting “clocked” by a car… I don’t know if you know such a person or it’s just theoretical, But in either case, first there’s family that should step in to help (mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, cousins, children, friends), then their church or synagogue, followed by local charities for which there are many and finally, as provider of last resort, the government. I just don’t think the government should be at the top of the list.

My suggestion, if you know someone like the person you describe, extend a helping hand.

As far as being tax more I think people like you, I and a lot on this site can find better ways to help the poor than the government. I know i spent a lot of time and money this way and I feel better for it.

You know it hurts my feeling when people say traders have no conscience. One of my first mentors who happens to be a preacher supports his 6 missionaries through trading profits. (millions) That hundreds of kids that would go hungry or w/o shelter if it wasn't for him.

Money isn't so much the issue, it's the quality of life. I think good people do good things. I've seen rich and poor make a difference.

Knut. You are so misinformed when it comes to the current crop of tea baggers. You seem to believe the propaganda spread by CNN and others like them.
Instead of listening to the lies spread by the other side. Why don't you attend a party? Why don't you read the things written by tea baggers?
Learn what we truly stand for before forming a opinion.
Your last post shows that you are truly ignorant on this subject.
Taxation WITHOUT representation was and is the problem being addressed.

Criticizing the rich is soooo unbecoming. And soooo un-American. This country was built on freedom and opportunity. The opportunity to be happy, free and RICH. We should celebrate those who achieve wealth through honest, hard work and natural, God-given talent. I immediately think of folks I admire like Oprah, Bill Gates and Tiger Woods. And what do these rich people do… they improve our lives through their talent and ingenuity and give back millions and millions to our community. Yes, we do have the occasional Bernard Madoff’s of the world and they should be found, prosecuted and jailed. But no one should use a broad brush to condemn those who have succeeded and become rich following the rules.

Knut, if you’re embarrassed by your success, don’t be. And never diminish what you’ve accomplished. It’s okay to be successful… Wouldn’t we want everyone to achieve success and be rich?

I wached a report by Hannity on the fox network last nite. It was about the onehundred and one worst ways the stimulis money is being thrown away for no purpose.
Bridges and roads being built to no where.
The sex life of the !@#$%.
A study to find out why men don't like to wear condoms.
And many more pork items that our reps have pushed through to grease their friends.
We as a country are crying poverty. And issueing I.O.U.s to workers. While the select few spend like they are rich.
These are the things the tea baggers are protesting.
Out of control stupidity. Spending on unneeded things. While kids go to bed hungry. And many homeless people. Billions spent on unwinable wars. Wars that are none of our business sometimes.
As Gary said above. The people and churches should take care of helping in some areas.
Our government has bigger things to worry about.
