Too Sensitive for this World?

  • Rating: 4 after 2 votes
Deepak Chopra recently commented on Michael Jackson's death as evidently they were good friends. Chopra ran through Jackson's disorders, dysfunctional childhood, pressures of celebrity, addictions to prescription drugs and reconstructive surgery, struggles with depression, he had lupus (an autoimmune disease) etc. and who knows what else, then at the end Chopra said Michael Jackson was just too sensitive to endure the pressures of this world. This reminded me of the line in the Don McClean song "Vincent", "this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you". Van Gogh went insane.
We have all known people for whom "coping" is a 24/7 struggle and just seem unable to "process" anger, fear, dispair etc.... I firmly believe that negative emotions become manifest in the wide variety of illnesses, addictions, "isms" and disorders that exist today.
We all feel far more than we ever express and I just wonder how many people suffer for simply having the misfortune of being too sensitive.

There are many people who just do not have what it takes to deal with the world they are forced to live in. Some have mental shortcomings. Some have emotional shortcomings. And some have physical shortcomings.
There are many who are beond my ability to understand how to deal with them.

The more I learn the less I know about some things.

Dave....great analysis. Life is a difficult buisness, anybody who pretends not, is kidding themselves.

As far as Jackson is concerned, he was plainly disturbed in a big way.

Cheers

Alex

Dave, you kind of nailed in on the head when you said "There are many who are beyond my ability to understand how to deal with them." I think this exemplifies the challenges faced by many who are on the Autism Spectrum or have other developmental disabilities that aren't as visually apparent as some obvious physical impairments. Most "typical" people are quite unaware of how differently others (with ASD/DD) see the world and communicate, not to mention sensory sensitivities. They are usually invisible or "odd" to the general population but hurting, often abused and/or neglected just the same because their differences make them odd and therefore "scary" or "freaks & geeks" or whatever. As a result, people are quick to judge, bully or criticize according to their own perspective and limited exposure to the perspectives of those who are different.

my good friend, Don Miguel Ruiz, wrote a book titled, "the four agreements", one of those basically says not to take anything personally ----- which sometimes is hard to do, but not impossible

I'd like to know more. I wish we could experience a simulation so we'd know what it's like during the course of a day for someone with Asperger's/Autism. I think we'd learn to be more accepting and compassionate.

Frank, you are so right. Well, just the other day I posted that I liked john lennon's original of his song " imagine " and that it was done better than the posted video cover. Whack ! I was jumped on by a few accusing me of being insensitive and mean spirited !

Interestingly, I have run into this topic of the Highly Sensitive Person from three different sources over the last few days. All from very different places. For more information, one of the sources supplied the following two websites:

http://www.hsperson.com/

http://www.highlysensitivesouls.com/

One of the website says this highly sensitive characteristic is “found in 15 to 20% of the population--too many to be a disorder, but not enough to be well understood by the majority of those around you.”

I don’t know that being too sensitive is a misfortune for a person. It is just the way a person is. Sometimes being highly sensitive keeps a person profoundly attuned to what is happening around them. I suppose the misfortune could be if the sensitive person does not learn to understand their level of sensitivity in dealing with day-to-day issues and stresses in the world.

So, so true Melissa! I'm sure most of us are far more sensitive than we like to admit. We need sensitivity in the world. An important ingredient for love, kindness, nurturing etc... Most of us can feel and then process those feelings. Some people it seems, are unable to do so. Perhaps those are the 15 to 20 %. I just wonder what it is that prevents them from doing so. Its sad these gentle souls are so tortured!
