in this weak economy - will you stumble or prosper?

My job is pretty much recession proof. But I think the economy at best is going to come to a stand still. Really I don't think we hit the absolute bottom, I'm afraid unemployment numbers might increase. Half of the TARP has been spent w/ no accountability or transparency. I thought it was suppose to help stimulate the economy.

I'm not so concerned for myself, but most my kids are in construction and that worries me.

yeah true ED , I have a brother in So. Cal who is a super. for a company that build huge tilt ups , like warehouses or major stores like costco. and some high rises downtown L A.... he got his walking papers last week... construction is going to be hard hit I am afraid.

So, Ed, do you think, if there is a financial meltdown, will there also be a social meltdown with the Katrena effect of pillaging and riots? Failures at all levels of government led to the disastrous lack of an effective response in the Katrina event ...

I wish I could say my job , business , was recession proof. I am just hoping that the economic indicaters for this area are right and we will start see things losen up here in the next couple of months. This area that we live in has always recooperated faster than other parts of the country and even calif.

But we have a long way to go. I think the new president will have a calming effect on our society and will implement new social changes. 2010 is the year to see if changes have taken place. i think we should be concerned with the eroding effect that takes place over time. Little things to keep them in check is what the government should concentrate on.

You are right on with your analysis of our government response or lack of.

But look at the individual response to Katrena, this alone gives us hope. i believe people as a whole are caring and giving.

It hurts me to see us as a human race not be tolerant to each other. As a young kid i was always trying to figure out how to unite human beings, stop the hatred. i came up w/ 2 things "God" and Martians invading the earth, this way we would have unite to get rid of the aliens. It would be humans against aliens.

Let's get other ideas, mine are one dimensional at times. i need people like you and my daughter to keep me grounded.

Ed, i believe you are grounded, so does your daughter and many others, it is evident through your writings , of which i enjoy reading ...

I think I will maintain.

I don't know how much more prosperous I will be, but I don't see myself stumbling.

I try to live simply and have no debt, other than my mortgage. No car payments, no credit cards, no personal loans.

I am not concerned for myself. I am concerned for the people who have families to support, high debt load and jobs that could disappear in an instant.

If the health care industry crashes, then I will have to go to another state or country to heal people.
The state of the Union is beyond a recession..... Unemployment WILL RISE. I have seen the increase at the homeless shelter of folks that were in home construction/general contracting, landscape architects, chefs, aeronautics. Why homeless? Lost their jobs, then couldn't pay the mortgage, couldn't pay the rent, & can live in their cars!
Even though I have lived a very thrifty lifestyle, the dollar has really lost value.

you may be right ...

We have always avoided debt and lived below our means because it is in alignment with our personal philosophy of treading lightly and not wasting resources. So we have financial reserves and a lifestyle that is pretty easy to maintain. But I know there are lots of people out there facing some pretty tough times and I really feel for them.

Regardless of who you are or where you stand, there is much to be learned right now.
