My MacBook Pro is in glitch mode and not charging. I've yet to borrow another cord to determine if it's my cord that's not working, or if a portal is not working, but either way, I wonder if anyone has had a similar experience. I'd also like to know if anyone has started using "My Fi" with their laptops.

JUNE CAMBRIA Meeting
The Cambria Computer Club June 2010 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 10th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). Jack Hennessy will present and discuss a very interesting video about Apple and the Macintosh. As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate.

ALERT
Please note that, because of vacation conflicts, there will be no July or August Cambria Computer Club Mac Users meetings in 2010. I hope to hit the ground running again in September.

APOLOGY
I apologize for not sending out a meeting announcement for May. I was overwhelmed by commitments and the calendar caught up with me — sorry!

Many indications point to the announcement of the new "Arrandale" (Core i5/i7) MacBook Pros is to take place tomorrow (4/13/10). Same sources suggest stores will be stocked on announcement day or within days.

The good, bad and ugly about Apple's new iPad? After 24 hours with the beast, I've thrown together a brief review. If you're interested, check it out:

After less than 10 hours with the iPad, I'm completely convinced it's a game-changer. AAPL is still a bargain.

Anyone have some insight on when the new "Arrandale" MacBook Pros will be announced? I've been holding off for months now and I really need a new laptop.

Thanks.

APRIL MEETING
The Cambria Computer Club April 2010 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 8th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The meeting topic will be "Back to Mac Basics", presented by Jack Hennessy. This presentation will consist of training videos and live demonstration of basic Mac OS X features including the desktop, the dock, the Apple menu, system preferences, the menu bar, the finder and the OS X file structure. There will be ample time for questions and answers during and after the presentation. Although this meeting is targeted at new/inexperienced Mac users, more seasoned users are encouraged to attend and contribute their expertise to the presentation.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate.

ROSETTA
If you've recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) or acquired a new Intel-based Mac with Snow Leopard installed, you may find that some of your legacy software is no longer working. If that's you, make sure that Rosetta has been installed on your system. Rosetta is Apple's utility that lets applications designed to run only on PowerPC-based Macs launch and run on Intel-based Macs, too. Although the number of apps that run only on Intel-based Macs is growing all the time, some applications were never and probably will never be updated with Intel Mac support. But changing applications isn't always an option.
Mac OS X 10.6 offers Rosetta as an optional install instead of including it as part of the default OS installation. For Mac owners that still rely on apps that can't run natively on Intel processors, Rosetta is easy to install. If you find out after your Snow Leopard upgrade that you need Rosetta, no problem. Mac OS X will will handle the Rosetta installation for you. If Rosetta isn't already installed when you try to launch a PowerPC-based application, Snow Leopard may display a dialog asking if you want to install Rosetta. Clicking Not Now stops the installation process, and your application won't launch. Clicking Install downloads and installs Rosetta from Apple's servers so your app can properly launch.
Many Mac users won't even notice that Rosetta isn't installed by default, but for those users that need it, it's nice to know Rosetta is only a couple of mouse clicks away.

MARCH MEETING
The Cambria Computer Club March 2010 Mac Users meeting will be held on Thursday the 11th in the Joslyn Center Conference Room at 2:00pm (doors open at 1:30). The meeting topics will be "Macworld 2010 Report" and "Using Your Mac to Go Paperless", presented by Jack Hennessy. Jack will be discussing his observations from the Macworld Expo and Users' Conference and he will present information on eliminating paper by storing and retrieving your important files electronically.
As usual, there will be an open forum prior to the main topic presentation, for questions and exchange of ideas. Arrive early to listen in or participate.

PERIAN
Perian is an open source component that enables Apple Inc.’s QuickTime to play several popular video formats not supported natively by QuickTime on Mac OS X. Billed as a "Swiss Army Knife for QuickTime," Perian installs a preference pane and components for over two dozen formats - everything from AVI, FLV, and DivX to curios like DTS Coherent Acoustics audio, Xiph Vorbis (in Matroska), and various subtitle formats. The settings give you a few options, for the likes of alerts and audio output, but most of Perian's functionality happens invisibly during video playback.

MARCH 17TH
In case you missed it (or want to see it again), Jack will be reprising his "Mac OS X Freeware" presentation for the San Luis Obispo Mac Users Group (SLOMUG) on the evening of Wednesday the 17th (time and location to be announced by SLOMUG). The original presentation was at the Cambria Computer Club Mac Users November 2009 meeting.
